Suffering has no class, caste or gender

On one hand Mobile health clinics are to come up in tribal areas of Madhya Pradesh to make up for the lack of basic medical care in the impoverished regions. Besides providing service at the doorsteps of tribal living in these blocks, the clinics will also render services during natural calamities. Sounds really concerned……..

But, what about the facilities in the capital -Bhopal?

Few days back while I was sitting with my crazy friend, waiting for the other friends to arrive at the newly spruced up MPT outlet Winds and Waves –the most picturesque milieu of the town. I was trying to juggle with the waiter for the order of ready-made tea .a tea bag in lukewarm water with an apathetic waiter was the only preference available.

Before I could even get a chance to ask why so/ I got a distressed call from my school mate to assist her in getting her unconscious mother admitted to a hospital in our own city Bhopal.
She expressed her annoyance for not getting through my mobile and than informed about her mothers accident. Her mother had fallen from stairs and suffered brain hemorrhage. Undergoing an operation to remove clots also did not give her consciousness.

The family wanted her to be relocated to Bhopal Memorial Hospital but the neurosurgeon at the hospital refused to admit her mother giving all horrendous reasons and defying all morals. He dreaded infection to other patients in the ICU, if this unconscious mother of my friend would be admitted. Before approaching me the family had arrange letters from the Minister in charge for the gas hospital, MLA, minority commission head, news paper editor and whoever they thought would facilitate.

Maliha wanted her mother to be shifted ahead of his brother’s departure date for US. The duo wanted their mother to be attended by the best doc and Hospital where facilities existed. Their mother was not being admitted because of the neurosurgeons lame explanation and the PRO boisterous behaviour. In spite of the fact, that the patient was a card holder of the hospital where privileges are given to the gas victims first. Nothing in the world can stop a patient being admitted in a hospital. But not to be understood by the few.

Meanwhile aloo paranthas with curd were ordered which were delicious as the order was repeated. The crazy champ wouldn’t have repeated the order, if the paranthas were not fresh and delicious. I left the restless soul with them and without displeasing others by my unavoidable conversation; I managed to move with my mobile and swung into action. Made calls to few doctors and lawyers for advice on this matter and reached a concord.

Although 9 am was fixed for the meeting in the hospital for us to make things swift. It was also decided that no hard talks, irritation or provocation would be met with, to avoid any kind of kind prejudice towards the patient. I was confident.

My bunch of friends had arrived and the champ was in a nasty mood by then. Steered near the lake and discussed the business plan and ended up listening FM mirchi becoz one of my friend is an RJ who happened to be with us. Some tips for programming and good conversation were chatted about. Finally the ending had to be with good house music for five of us for which my car sterio was used.

Both of us reached a bit earlier to discuss all the relevant details the Doc may ask. Discussed, assembled all the reports of the previous hospital and a NOC the Doctor for shifting her mother. Before approaching him we both waited for 40 minutes outside his cabin. The meeting was successful by gods grace after resentment; I did not loose an opportunity to make him agree to book the bed in the ICU.

It was not nepotism but presence of mind against societal attitude, sedate morals of few doctors who forget the meaning of their profession.

  1. people react adversely because they have their own insecurities and fears about some thing , they might not be able to / or willing to explain. If we direct our conversation towards understanding that fear and making efforts to irradicate them, things could turn out better.

  2. Its sad to note that Maliha's mother had to go through so much trouble for admission in the hospital. However we cannot just blame the govt and its policies. Its the staff at the hospital who are responsible for delay which can cause irreparable loss to the patient.
I know Maliha and her family. Its surprising that she had to call you for help as her father is influential person and has a lot of contacts with government officials, lawyers, doctors and even in the parliament. Besides he is also a member of club of masons and a active member of one hospital. He must have contacted those contacts and if they did not help at such moment then its really sad. Such so called influential guys will all turn up if malihas father gives party for his 50th marriage anniversary and will talk volumes of their influences and good work but when the time of real help comes no one comes forward.

This is the lesson for Maliha and for all of us. Ironically Malihas fathers friend is a lawyer who could have helped or at least later sued the hospital staff for such gross negligence. But he is incapable of helping in humanitarian causes as he is a divorce lawyer and is good only in creating divorces of happily married couples. The lawyers of actress karishma thought from their head thus advised her and her hubby to reconcile but maliha's fathers lawyer thinks from his butt thus offers shitty advice. Such a lawyer should be kicked in his butt and when this lawyers own childrens divorce takes place sweets will be distributed to all in the mohalla as a celebration.

The moral of all this is that policy is nothing unless implemented by the people who are responsible for implementing the same. Further one should not rely on people and what they say as they may be just boasters. Trust yourself first. The person who can help most is yourself and your immediate family members. Ditching ones own family members and relying on freinds and contacts makes one vulnerable and others simply take undue advantage of the situation. Its the immediate family members who can be of help in good and bad times and if they are not there then there is no point in blaming the authorities or anyone.
The negligent staff of the hospital should be taken to task and legal action should be taken on them, lets see whether it will be done in this case.

  3. Am sure you are or were a close family member of this family. But… where was your conscience at that time.

  5. I guess, we need to be a bit more deciplined while sharing the cyber space. The views expressed are entirely personal and should be taken in that spirit. Readers may / may not agree to the views. Lets opt for constructive critisism. No need to get personal.

  6. A serious topic of refusal to admit a critical patient by the hospital authorities is been taken lightly by this blog. Its fine to blame the others for their shortcomings but i feel we all are to blame somewhere or the other.
Take for instance the beginning of the blog is about having a delicious snack of samosas etc then followed by the emergency call and then again the tea, lakeside music etc. An essay in school with these spicy toppings to make an interesting reading is fine but here topic being grave such spice is not required.

I am not taking the side of hospital staff who refused to admit but why only blame the staff. There are sometimes reasons for asking the patient to be shifted elsewhere like lack of certain facilities etc. These are normally not understood by the people and they bring in pressure thorough their contacts. I would like to stress on this fact that letters from ministers or pressure form local goons do not cure the patient. Yes it may help in the hospital giving more attention at the cost of other patients but i repeat this does not cure or heal. In many cases i have seen that the patient has no family visitors which psychologically makes the patient feel lonely. However ill the patient may be a regular visits by family members gives a psychological boost to the will power which helps patient heal faster. Its wrong to leave the patient to the nurses and doctors while the family remains busy in their own chores.

Secondly our family values have become more westernised and are losing the human touch. For example the blogger has mentioned "she wanted her mother to be shifted ahead of her brothers departure to the US". This is unbelievable as how someone can leave a critical family member and go abroad. Well, her brother was going to the USA and I stayed in the US and know that only the materialistic life is lived in those countries. Humanity is only talked about and not practiced. Country is full of nuclear families, single mothers, single parents, multiple marriages, extra marital affairs and so on. People have no time for anyone which includes ones family. People who go to work in USA do not even return to meet their family members for as long as 5 years or even more.

Thirdly the blog mentions that her friend has used all known influences including ministers but nothing happened but when author intervened the hospital staff agreed to admit. When such a great help was provided the bloggers friend should at least had the courtesy to put a note of thanks here on this blog. Surely she must be aware of this blog as it is around for more than a year, a small note of thanks would have been really appreciated.
With all the above lacunae I wonder whether such an incident really did take place or is just an essay.

Finally I too am to blame for simply pointing out the shortcomings of this blog. There is nothing personal here for anyone associated with this blog and regret for any harm or inconvenience caused to anyone.

  8. Dr Sridhar's comments are interesting. That surely puts another side of the story. But Truth could be like the hard edge of the coin.
