Is the Panna Tiger case solved ?

Its a good news that three poachers who were accused of killing a tiger in March, have been arrested by the Panna Tiger Reserve (PTR) officers. I still cant believe that the officers have caught them and have seized bones of the dead tiger from their possession. The PTR had lost all its native tigers by the commencement of 2009 as gathered form the report collected through RTI
The investigation which was on since 3 years and the last raid conducted at Barhu village in Devendranagar range of North Panna division on sunday was fruitful as claimed by the Officers. The confiscation of tiger bones from the house of Mijaji Gond and the search party also found parts of a sambhar from the houses of Ishwardin Singh and Munni Lal Tiwari.
During interrogation the arrested admitted that they had poached a tiger in March this year.what a coincidence, this is exactly written in the MP Panna report. The poachers also confirms selling the tiger skin with an aim of destroying evidences. Mijaji and other co-accused burnt the carcass of the tiger at Pattalia Seha on the banks of river Baghin. After collecting bones from the spot Mijaji  took them home. Surprisingly the forest officials  recovered the partially burnt remains of the tiger also  and other bones from the scene.
PTR Field Director RS Murthy further informed that a hunt has been launched to nab the other accused and they expect to get success in the matter shortly. The poachers were produced in the court after a case was registered against them under relevant sections of Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.
We should not miss what the locals from Panna  claim" the striped feline killed by the poachers could be the same one, whose pugmarks were located in Pahadikhera area, situated in North Panna division in November last year. "At the same time, a male-striped cat translocated to the PTR had also disappeared from the park, but was later brought back.

Why Madhya Pradesh CM opposse Ratapani as sixth Project national park?

"Madhya Pradesh is a tiger state. We are not averse to tiger and its protection. But we do not want it at the cost of the poor, especially tribals. Many villages will need to be shifted for turning Ratapani into a tiger reserve," Shivraj Chouhan said at the 15th national conference of Akhil Bhartiya Adivasi Vikas Parishad.

Ratapani in Madhya Pradesh got tiger reserve status in 2008. Located in the Raisen district of Madhya Pradesh, this is one of the finest teak forests in the state and is a short drive away from the capital Bhopal. It has 10-11 tigers in the forest area. Its close proximity to the capital and its relatively untouched forests makes it a promising attraction for tourists and the MP Eco tourism board has made the place a wildlife destination.

The sanctuary runs parallel on the northern side of Narmada River, the "life line of Madhya Pradesh". Kolar River forms the western boundary of the Sanctuary. Concerned over the declining number of tigers in the country, Centre had sanctioned Madhya Pradesh's Ratapani Sanctuary as sixth Project Tiger national park after 8-10 tigers were found there.

Not ready to lose a single vote instead he blames the Union Forest Minister Jairam Ramesh decision for turning Ratapani into Tiger Reserve which will result into shifting large numbers of villages.. Least realizing the process is already ongoing since 18 months. The Villagers and forest dwellers have been informed and they are ready. Illegal mining, stone crushing-teak mafia has pressure the Government and he has succumbed to the pressure like he did in Panna Tiger Reserve.

He should not forget that in the Felicitation programme on his completion of 5 years no tribal leader was even asked to be on the dice in-spite of the fact that he represents a Tribal rich state  in which he claimed 21 per cent of the state budget was earmarked for tribal development. What a Farce!

Don't become prey to lions: CJ

The Gujarat high court has stayed land deals in the periphery of the lions' den – the Gir sanctuary.

Issue involves possession of land by non-Maldharis

While ordering a stay on land deals in the reserved forest surrounding the Gir sanctuary, chief justice SJ Mukhopadhaya called for maintaining a balance between development and nature. The forest department has been maintaining that the increased grazing has resulted in decrease of prey for lions in the forest. Moreover, the forest officials have also been insisting that the sale of plots allotted to Maldharis be declared illegal, and non-Maldharis be evicted from the place. However, the petitioner claims that he has been deliberately harassed by forest officials due to other social consideration and his ownership of the plot is legal. To this, the chief justice commented, "Lions' place has to be protected. You shift from the place before you become prey to lions.

After London the elephants will parade in Delhi to save tigers

After London  the brightly painted elephant sculptures will be in India. 18th December, 57 fibreglass tigers worked upon by well-known contemporary artists such as Anjolie Ela Menon, Paresh Maiti, G R Iranna, Vivek Vilasini and Anandjit Ray, will be installed at 52 locations all over the city.

Aparajita Jain, director of the city-based Seven Art Gallery who, along with art collector Swapan Seth and social activist Nandita Kathpalia Baig conceived of the project..

They will then go to the 56 corporate patrons of the project who have paid Rs 1.5 lakh to book each. There’ll be a lucky draw held on December 19 at the Taj Mansingh hotel, conducted, interestingly by the head boy and girl of Vasant Valley School, to determine which company gets which sculpture.

The money raised will go to the Ranthambhore Foundation, the NGO run by Valmik Thapar, and will be used to empower the women and educate the children of the local “poaching tribes”. Hopefully doing so will give the tiger a better stab at evading extinction.
